Multistate bike ride makes stop on Saturday in Topeka

A self-proclaimed “Arizona boy,” Kyle Crump wasn’t exactly overjoyed Saturday morning when told he would be riding his bicycle over a challenging course that covered about 50 miles round-trip from Lake Shawnee to Clinton Lake.

“I was scared to death when they were talking about the course being ‘hard and hilly,’ ” Crump, 46, of Tempe, Ariz., said shortly after completing his ride. “But it worked out well. It was beautiful out there.”

The ride was part of the multistate Tour de Ted Ride the Wire event, sponsored by Edward Jones investment services, through which funds are being raised for cancer research.

As part of the fundraising effort, a $10,000 check from the Edward Jones corporate office was presented Saturday afternoon to the Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University in Manhattan.
