To take a leading role in conquering cancers in our time.

Outreach

The Johnson Center for Basic Cancer Research strives to inform the public about cancer, risk reduction, and cancer research at K-State.

Presentations and Tours

Presentations are provided locally and across the state and region to inform the public about cancer and the cancer research taking place at K-State. We offer tours (see photos of a tour) and give presentations to philanthropies, support groups, church groups, and other community groups. Call 785-532-6705 to schedule a tour or presentation.

Community collaboration

Community collaboration to educate about cancer is an important part of the center’s effort to serve the community, increase cancer awareness, and promote healthy living. The center is proud to be involved with the following groups and projects. Contact Marcia at the cancer center for more information about any of these programs:

Manhattan Cancer Awareness Committee

The Manhattan Cancer Awareness Committee educates about cancers and promotes early detection. Presentations on colon, breast, and other cancers, as well as secondhand smoke, are offered to local groups.

Cancer Resource Network

The Cancer Resource Network of Manhattan strives to know, and inform each other and the community about local, cancer-related resources and activities, and address needs where possible. They have created the Cancer Resources of Manhattan guide, as well as the When A Friend Has Cancer booklet, which suggests ways to help and show love and concern for loved ones facing cancer.

Women’s Health Matters

The 2009 Women’s Health Matters was Saturday morning, August 8. Participants heard presentations about various women’s health and wellness topics like dietary supplements, personal body image, energy efficiency, and self defense. They also enjoyed a healthy breakfast, got wellness tests and massages, and won prizes!

A Day With Dr. Waddle

A Day With Dr. Waddle is an activity book written especially for children by the Cancer Center staff in 1988 to introduce them to the difficult subject of cancer in an informative yet sensitive manner, as well as teach them about science and good health habits to follow. Dr. Waddle is a duck who happens to be a scientist and welcomes children into his laboratory for a day. The Spanish version, Un Día Con el Dr. Waddle, was written in order to reach the growing Spanish-speaking population with Dr. Waddle’s important lesson.

George S. Bascom Memorial Workshop Series

The George S. Bascom Memorial Workshop Series in Clinical Medicine has been held since 1996. Distinguished experts come to K-State to present to faculty, students, and the public about challenges faced in clinical medicine and research.

Cancer Information Center

The Cancer Information Center is a community service provided by the Johnson Cancer Center to help individuals inform themselves about cancers and cancer-related issues. In addition to some written materials, an online computer (with printer) is available for conducting internet research—with staff assistance, if desired. There are two visitor parking spaces outside the center and guests are always welcome during office hours.

Fundraising events

Fundraising events, such as the Tough Enough to Wear Pink Rodeo, presented by the Kaw Valley Rodeo Association, and the Rob Regier Memorial Golf Tournament, sponsored by Grand Mère Development, Manhattan, Kansas, and the Sunny 102.5 FM Wildcat Challenge, are held throughout the year to support current research and education programs and the development of new ones. Staff inform the public about the Center’s research and education programs and opportunities to contribute to the fight against cancers. These fundraising efforts are coordinated by individuals, organizations, and businesses on behalf of the Center. We are thankful for their generosity and enthusiasm.

The Rob Regier Memorial Golf Tournament is hosted each year by the Regier family in memory of their son and brother Rob. After losing Rob to cancer, they decided to help K-State in its fight against the disease. This tournament raises thousands of dollars every year for the fight.

Wildcat Challenge

SUNNY 102.5 and COACH BILL SNYDER urge you to join them this football season in the challenge to help K-State cancer researchers tackle cancer!
