Exposure to ionizing radiation has been linked to increased risk of cancer in humans. Commonly, patients and technicians are exposed to ionizing radiation during medical procedures such as x-rays and CT scans. Less common, but more unpredictable and more dangerous, are exposures due to galactic cosmic rays (astronauts) and dirty bombs. Our group is involved in the design, fabrication and testing of detectors for ionizing radiation. Ultimately, these detectors can be used to more accurately determine exposure levels in humans and design more effective shielding against ionizing radiation, thereby lowering the risk of cancer in humans.
