“More than 28 million people in the United States are deaf or hard of hearing and about two million are impaired by dizziness or have difficulties with balance. Many forms of hearing and balance disorders are related to impaired ion and water transport or impaired blood flow regulation in the inner ear. We study fluid homeostasis as well as blood flow regulation in the inner ear. A detailed understanding of homeostatic mechanisms in the inner ear is a necessary prerequisite to finding cures for auditory and vestibular disorders that are induced by genetic mutations, noise trauma or ototoxic drugs including anti-cancer drugs.”
