Droplet-based microfluidic platform facilitates cancer in vitro diaganosis, liquid biopsy and 3D microenvironment. Electromicrofluidic (EMF) platform that employs electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) and dielectrophoresis (DEP) efficiently controls droplets and (bio)particles using appropriate electric signals without sophisticated microchannels and pumps. The droplets with precise volume following programmable routes and protocols make the EMF platform a perfect means to perform bioassays and liquid biopsy. The ability to address the cells/particles and molecules (DNA, protein) dispersed in the droplets facilitates the purification and sensing of the targets. In addition, the multi-scale manipulation is pivotal to EMF-based 3D biopinting with precisely positioned biomaterial (hydrogel) droplets and cells to construct a tumor microenvironment for cancer study and therapy.
