The human complement system is an innate immune pathway that acts as a first-line-of-defense against microbial pathogens. In addition to playing a central role in the mechanism of action for many cancer immunotherapies, complement biology is also involved in antitumor immunity. My lab studies the structure and function of complement proteins to better understand their involvement in human diseases. We then leverage this basic science to facilitate the discovery and development of novel complement-directed agents.
