There is mounting evidence supporting the importance of the microbiome in its influence on cancer development and therapy. Therefore, a working knowledge of the microbiome is vital as we advance in the pursuit of precision medicine. We need to understand the influence of the microbiome on immune responses and cancer, as well as the factors influencing the associated microbial constituents. Enhancing the understanding of the relationship between the human host and its microbiome may provide strategies to manipulate the microbiome to augment therapeutic responses.
