The ribosome, made up of ribonucleic acids and proteins, is a major player in protein synthesis. Ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) are a group of naturally occurring toxins which split the large ribonucleic acid at a specific site. This leads to blockage of protein synthesis, and cell death. I am working to fuse RIPs with partners which selectively target cancer cells, potentially causing their death. In addition, I have been investigating the basic molecular mechanism of these RIPs to further our understanding of their capacity to regulate and impair protein synthesis and explore additional possible suicide gene therapies for cancer.
